Remco Evenepoel has recently spent time in Qatar for the Formula 1 event but after the weekend he returned home to Belgian in the Flanders region for some more training before heading to a training camp. This morning he has been involved in a training accident and has been taken to the hospital.
It's unclear at the moment how this incident has happened but the reports from Het Nieuwsblad and Het Laatste Nieuws suggest that he collided with a car whilst out on the road by himself. It's not known what the exact consequences are, and he has been taken to the hospital for check ups, as was seen by several spectators who witnessed the aftermath of the incident. More updates are expected soon from the
Soudal - Quick-Step camp.
UPDATE 1
More pictures have been released throughout the morning from the scene of the crash, in which it was possible to see Evenepoel's golden bike with a clear break in it's frame. Reportedly, the Belgian was unable to avoid the opening door of a postal truck.
Patrick Lefevere has shared with Sporza that Evenepoel was in pain, and being examined at the Herentals hospital with pain in his left arm and shoulder.
However more bad news may be soon to be official as Het Nieuwsblad are writing that the Olympic Champion has been diagnosed with a fractured collarbone as a result of the crash. This would come in very bad timing as Soudal - Quick-Step are preparing for their first training camp in Spain in the space of a few weeks.
