Stage 4 of the Tour de Luxembourg was always going to be the decisive day for the overall classification contenders and that proved to be the case. Ethan Hayter stormed to the stage win in the long time-trial, whilst Brandon McNulty overtook Mattias Skjelmose to take over the race lead ahead of the final day of the race.
After the race exploded on the hills the day prior, there were two obvious contenders for the overall victory: Brandon McNulty and Mattias Skjelmose, with the Dane entering the 26-kilometer long time-trial in Niederanven with 8 seconds of lead.
However there was a stage up for grabs and the distance allowed for the specialists to make serious differences. This was the case with the British national champion Ethan Hayter who put in a storming time, averaging 51.5Km/h and holding his lead with a large advantage throughout the afternoon. Ben Healy was the first rider to come within a minute of the Soudal - Quick-Step rider, and Hayter's incredible second half of the course meant that not even the main GC contenders would be likely to come close to his time.
This proved to be true when Brandon McNulty crossed the line with the second best time, 27 seconds down. Skjelmose in the meantime didn't even make into the final Top10 on the day and couldn't defend his race lead against the American.
