Tour de France 2024 stage 5 GC Update | Tadej Pogacar remains in yellow after heart-stopping moment

Stage 5 of the Tour de France 2024 promised a day of apparent calm for the overall favorites with a day that had to be decided by sprint, barring a surprise, and so it was, with a historic result after Mark Cavendish flew to the finish line to surpass, at 39, Eddy Merckx's record number of wins. Tadej Pogacar was back in the yellow jersey after his victory on the Col du Galibier that left him 45 seconds behind Remco Evenepoel, 2nd, and 50 seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard, 3rd.

It seemed that the day was going to be calm, because Pogacar was about to suffer a crash that could have affected him, when the stage was entering its final 60 km. A small island in the middle of the road caused a small accident involving Pello Bilbao and two Movistar Team riders, Nelson Oliveira and Gregor Mühlberger. The Slovenian, thanks to his reflexes, managed to escape unharmed. But, as far as the overall is concerned, will the end of the historic sprint have left any changes in the Top 10?

Hardly anything. Pogacar remains 1st with the aforementioned lead of 45 seconds over Remco Evenepoel, 2nd and 50 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard, 3rd. His teammate Juan Ayuso remains the best Spaniard overall with his 4th place 20 seconds behind the Visma star and 1 minute and 10 seconds behind the Slovenian. Primoz Roglic remains 5th, 1 minute and 14 seconds behind the yellow jersey. The next two places are still held by Carlos Rodriguez and Mikel Landa, the former 1 minute and 16 seconds behind the leader and the latter 1 minute and 32 seconds behind.

João Almeida, Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal continue to make up the Top 10 in 8th, 9th and 10th position respectively. The Portuguese rider is at the same distance from his leader Pogacar as Landa. However, Ciccone remains at 3 minutes and 20 seconds, and Bernal at 3 minutes and 21 seconds.
