Tom Pidcock doesn't have in Milano-Sanremo a perfectly suited race, but the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team rider still had a decent chance of finishing in the first positions taking into consideration his current form and downhill skills. However it was nothing like what he had expected, as during the race itself a crash prevented him from reacting to the race-deciding attack.
Before the race yesterday the Briton talked about what was a rough night spent at the team's hotel, where he was bothered by the noise around: “Yeah, I feel okay. I got woken up at like 6:00 a.m. this morning by people being noisy in the hotel but apart from that, yeah, great,” he said with a wry smile. “That’s not that good then, but the night before doesn’t really matter, so it’s fine.”
However that positivity would fade at what was perhaps the most important moment in the race: The positioning battle into the Cipressa. Although no-one would've predicted it, there was a small crash at the bottom and a few riders were stuck behind it as well. Pidcock was one, and with a fall costing at least some 10 seconds at such a key point where UAE Team Emirates - XRG decided to go all-out, it was impossible to get back to the front of the peloton in time for Tadej Pogacar's expected attack.
"289 km of racing with space for a few mistakes. Today, we saw ourselves on the other side of luck at the foot of Cipressa, with a small crash involving Tom Pidcock before attacks kicked off, we were on the back foot," the team wrote on social media.
Pidcock did make his way into the peloton but at that point the victory was gone, and on the Poggio di Sanremo no-one managed to make the difference in the chasing peloton. On the back of the group, Pidcock rode in a very absent 40th place to conclude his first monument of the year. "If it was easy, it wouldn't be called a Monument. Next time".

- Huh? So when the men’s is boring and the women’s isn’t should they transfer money or how do you suggest to do things. Last I heard, it’s a bunch of mostly ageing chubby men who set the criteria for women’s races (and in most sports it’s still rather like how religions are run). Don’t think the girls are particularly against doing the same races as the men. Anyway, there’s a huge unjustified gap between 11% of and a difference of 11%. - C’mon, nobody has ever spoken of Ganna in the same breath as those two until a few months ago and he showed how close a thing it can be when he’s on form, nobody can know in advance what form Remco will have, his Olympic form would cause even Tadej problems, and Wout, well, we’ll just have to wait and see but you can’t really write him off in advance.Mistermaumau25-03-2025
- Quite true but I’d not rule MVDP out yet, am pretty sure he will still improve in climbing and maybe not every rival will do every edition so stars may still align. - MSR really did open the can of worms.... A personal view, of the three noted Tadej is most likely to get the set he has the skill, the talent and sheer bloody-mindedness to win everywhere. Yes the it'll all have to come right to pick up Roubaix and MSR but he's already proved himself on all terrain. I'd rate Remco's chances of getting the 5 fractionally higher than MVDP, he can climb so LBL/Lombardia as less of a problem but he's yet to prove himself on the other races and we don't know how well and how quick he'll get back to where he was after injury, this has been a long lay off. MVDP, I'd love to see him do it but I think Lombardia is too much of a stretch, the organisers will not create an "easier" route just to pull him in. I've said on other articles that I fear for Wout, I don't know that he is at the same level as MVDP and Tadej anymore, they have cranked the level up while Wout has been recovering from last years debacle. Will it happen who knows but it's going to be incredible to watch over the next couple of years!slappers6625-03-2025
