“This overall victory really does mean something” – Wout van Aert seals rare GC win after dominant three-stage Tour of Denmark comeback

Wout van Aert placed his Tour of Denmark victory among the more meaningful successes of his career after completing his return to racing with three stage wins and the overall title.

The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider finished 21 seconds ahead of Lukas Kubis after safely negotiating the final stage into Rodovre, where a late crash disrupted the sprint won by Rasmus Søjberg Pedersen.

Van Aert had already built his winning margin across the opening three days. He prevailed from a reduced group in Aalborg, edged Jensen Plowright in an exceptionally tight photo finish in Skive and then defeated Kubis on the queen stage into Vejle.

“This overall victory really does mean something to me,” Van Aert told VTM Nieuws. “I don’t often get the chance to fight for the general classification, so I’m happy to experience that again.”

His opportunities to pursue stage-race victories have been limited despite a career filled with major one-day successes. The 2026 Tour of Denmark became only his third overall win in a professional stage race, following his previous triumphs at the same event in 2018 and the Tour of Britain.

This latest success also arrived immediately after an enforced spell away from competition. Van Aert entered the race searching for answers over his condition after an elbow injury and subsequent infection ruled him out of the Tour de France.

The final stage was not entirely ceremonial. A 21-rider breakaway forced Visma to spend much of the afternoon controlling the gap before the race came back together on the closing circuits. Van Aert remained interested in the sprint but became boxed in before a major crash split the bunch near the line.

“There was a very large breakaway up the road and we still wanted to try to make something of the stage,” he explained. “I was frustrated that I got boxed in. I wanted to ride for a result, but above all I’m happy that I made it safely to the finish.”

That relief carried extra weight after an incident-filled week. Van Aert was caught behind following a mass crash on Stage 1 and was forced off the road while avoiding teammate Ashlin Barry’s fall during the queen stage.

Neither incident prevented him from winning, while his 11th place in Rodovre was enough to complete the overall victory without further trouble. “The legs are good, so I can head into the next races with confidence,” Van Aert said.

Van Aert also left Denmark impressed by the crowds that followed the race, particularly the gathering around the final podium. “Honestly, there aren’t many races where you see that many people gathered in front of the podium, so I really enjoyed it,” he told DR Sporten. “It reminds me of the madness we have in Belgium for cyclocross, which is very similar. Even though I’ve won much bigger races, winning still gives you the best feeling, so I’ve really enjoyed this week.”

The comparison captured the tone of a race in which Van Aert was the central attraction from the opening stage onwards. His comeback produced victories in three different types of finish, control of the leader’s jersey and a rare opportunity to celebrate an overall classification success.

Van Aert left Denmark with four days in yellow, three stage victories and the third professional stage-race title of his career.
