On stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey this afternoon, BORA - hansgrohe's Danny van Poppel initially thought he had secured the victory after a frantic sprint for the line. The race jury however, quickly quietened the celebrations.
With van Poppel adjudged to have deviated from his sprinting line in the final few hundred metres, the jury saw fit to award the victory to Giovanni Lonardi, who when crossing the line in second place, left no one in any doubt about his frustrations.
“The final corner made the sprint very tricky," reflects BORA - hansgrohe sports director, Bernhard Eisel to the team's official X (Twitter) account, after the decision of the race jury had been announced. "This is a tremendous setback for both Danny and the team, especially after our intense efforts today.”
Wider afield however, the decision seems to have been met mostly with agreement from fans on social media. See the incident for yourself down below and make up your own mind!
