Tadej Pogacar has without a doubt been one of the sensations of the season so far, taking numerous wins in stage-races whilst also riding a spring campaign that included very strong performances at Milano-Sanremo and Tour des Flandres where he battled for the win.
This week, his spring will come to an end with Flèche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the final two Ardennes classics: "We’re coming back to the Ardennes with great memories from last year. It’s a period I look back on with great fondness. To take the win in Liege was like a dream and I feel a nice connection with this race."
Since the Tour of Flanders the next day I went to test the pavé sectors for the Tour de France which was an exciting experience. They are quite hard but it’s good to have an idea of what to expect before the Tour," Pogacar added.
He will be tackling different roads this week, this time in the Belgian Ardennes where the cobbles are nowhere in sight, but the steep ascents will. UAE Team Emirates come with several options. 2020 winner Marc Hirschi is one, but also youngster Juan Ayuso, Diego Ulissi, Marc Soler and Jan Polanc who have all shown this season to be capable of fighting for a top place.
Pogacar concluded: "For these Ardennes races we have a very dynamic team. The form is good and I think I can do well but on a whole the team is very strong and we’ll have options which is always an advantage.”
UAE Team Emirates for Flèche Wallone: Tadej Pogacar, Juan Ayuso, Marc Hirschi, Vegard Stake Laengen, Jan Polanc, Marc Soler and Diego Ulissi.
