Switzerland's
Stefan Küng was one of the favorites to win the opening time trial of the
Giro d'Italia. However, he was only able to finish fifth in the stage, far behind Remco Evenepoel (43 seconds) and his rival in the specialty, Filippo Ganna, who was also more than twenty seconds ahead of him.
After the race, the Groupama-FDJ rider said that he had prepared for this moment in the Corsa Rosa and that he had put a lot of effort into it. However, he explained that today's time trial did not suit him particularly well and that he believes that next Sunday's race is much better suited to his conditions.
"I tried to prepare as best I could after the classics for the Giro and I gave it my all, I think it proved to be the pattern," the Swiss said. The flat terrain and fast speeds early on in the effort were the terrain where Küng could make his power felt, however Remco Evenepoel took the lead from quite early on. The Groupama-FDJ rider was left fighting for minor places, eventually matching Primoz Roglic at the line with a fifth place.
"Personally I think I finished too far away to have fought for the victory, this was my debut. He is very strong, I worked hard this winter, but I lost too much, 40 seconds. Next Sunday will be a better time trial for me, it will be an interesting stage," he concluded.
