French cycling legend and grandfather to current superstar Mathieu van der Poel, Raymond Poulidor is much missed by the cycling community. This continues to show as he will be honoured with a bronze statue at the top of Pla d'Adet.
The Tour de France will visit Pla d'Adet in 2024 and it is hoped that the statue will be fully up by the time the race visits. The Breton sculptor Bernard Potel will make the statue, having previously made similar statues of French icons Charles de Gaulle and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
Work started on the site in September and a call for donations has been launched by the association “Les amis de Raymond Poulidor” and the local town council.
Poulidor was never able to win the Tour de France. Despite his quality, living in the time of Eddy Merckx ensured that the Frenchman had to settle for second at best. Poulidor did however, take a famous stage win atop the Col d'Adet in 1974, making it the perfect place for his statue.
