David Lappartient issued a video representing the UCI talking about how the past World Championships in Zurich and the upcoming 2025 Worlds in Rwanda, the first time this happens in Africa. Many criticized him over the lack of mention over the riders that have passed away this year in competition and that has put the UCI president under a lot of fire.
Overall, there were plenty criticism mainly over the lack of mention of Muriel Furrer, the young Swiss junior rider who passed away after crashing during the women's event in Zurich, only a few kilometers from her home. This fall has sparked once again the very split debate of race radios in cycling, mainly at World Championships where they are not yet allowed.
However aside of that, some such as Johan Bruyneel hit at Lappartient directly for the statement. "This guy doesn’t care about anything else than his own self promotion and everything he does and says is intended to serve his personal political escalade," Johan Bruyneel wrote in a post on X.
"As we say in Flemish, Jonas: “iemand die bekwaam is om zijn bloedeigen moeder te verkopen” (you can google translate it, David, if you want to know what it means) (it’s people who have worked closely together with him by the way who gave him this kind of qualification).
The saying translates to "someone who is capable of selling their own mother", harsh words coming from the Belgian who was a former pro, but also a manager for the US Postal team for Lance Armstrong - both of which received lifetime bans from the sport later on.
