The opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos saw a furious hilltop finale, which Bahrain - Victorious' Santiago Buitrago took advantage of to take another strong win this season.
The stage was to be decided in the final ascent to the Burgos castle, with Ruben Guerreiro attacking in the base, and shortly after Santiago Buitrago launched a move with no response. In such a short effort, the space that opened was excessive, and the peloton responded too late to the move, seeing the Colombian succeed at the finish.
The Colombian is also the new leader of the race, and has positioned himself as a strong contender for the GC fight. Ruben Guerreiro and Tao Geoghegan Hart finished second and third on the day.
