It took quite a long time but today
Team DSM have gotten their first win of the season. They were the last World Tour team without a win, but
Sam Welsford broke that win-less streak today at the
Tour of Turkey with a breakthrough sprint win.
“I’m over the moon. It’s my first pro victory and my first year in the pro peloton and I’ve been really enjoying it so far. With my team, Team DSM, we’ve been really hungry and we’ve improved step-by-step and that win has been coming, so I’m really happy for the team and myself," Welsford said after the finish of the fifth stage of the race.
Team DSM came to Turkey with a lineup fully focused on the sprints, with Cees Bol, Alberto Dainese and Welsford all coming with ambitions. The team's sprinters have been having a very hard time this season, and it came as a surprise to see Welsford being the card for DSM today. The Australian was in the perfect wheel - of Jasper Philipsen - and launched his bid to the line at the perfect time to rack up his first pro win.
"We came here with three fast guys, with Alberto, Cees and myself. We’ve been able to mix it up and really work well together as a really fast lead out team and dial in the process of leading out successfully, which we’ve done over the last couple of days I think. Today it worked out really well. We really nailed in our process and the win is a result of hard work that we’ve been putting in this season and the last couple of days. I saw the line and put my head down and couldn’t believe it when I crossed the line first," he concluded.
