Sam Bennett has had a steady evolution in 2022, and it seems as if he will be able to hit peak form towards the Tour de France. Having obtained his first win back at BORA - hansgrohe last month, there is a lot of focus on having the Irishman fighting for the sprints and the green jersey in a month's time.
“I am really confident that Sam is on track for the Tour, and that we will see him there at his best and that he can fight for the green jersey. Sam made a big performance step after his first race block," his coach Dan Lorang told VeloNews. It started almost a year ago, Sam Bennett was almost completely out for the second half of 2021 due to knee issues that lingered well into 2022. Despite having started his season off at the UAE Tour with two podium places, he had said at the time that he was lacking form.
That was due to his inability to do a proper preparation as he was still dealing with a bad knee, however at Eschborn-Frankfurt he "showed already a good result," having won the race with the support of Danny van Poppel - a duo that has been working really well this season.
“From now until the Tour, we are always working in blocks, in terms of his training," he said. Racing-wise, Bennett is expected to race some Belgian classics and the Belgium Tour ahead of the Tour de France where Lorang has said that "I am really confident that Sam is on track for the Tour."
