Results women's under-23 time trial world championships - Australian victory as Felicity Wilson-Haffenden beats the competition

The women's U23 time trial at the Montreal World Championships concluded with a new world champion and a particularly tight battle for the medals. Felicity Wilson-Haffenden claimed gold after staging a spectacular comeback in the second half of the course, while Nienke Vinke and Luca Vierstraete rounded out the podium.

The Dutch rider had set a high benchmark early on. Vinke clocked 28:09 and appeared poised for a prestigious victory after clearly beating Febe Jooris. Her time remained the mark to beat for much of the race.

However, Wilson-Haffenden had other plans. The Australian—the national champion in the discipline and one of the pre-race favorites—began to fly during the decisive kilometers. At the first intermediate check, she was just less than a second behind Vinke, but she subsequently managed to turn that tiny deficit into a decisive lead.

Further back, the battle for the top spots also remained thrilling until the very end. Vierstraete ultimately secured the silver medal, while Viktória Chladoňová missed the podium narrowly. Spain's Paula Ostiz finished sixth, having ridden near the front for much of the race.

The race began with Celia Torres setting the initial benchmark. The Spaniard clocked 8:38.26 at the first checkpoint, leading Haixin Dong and Florencia Monsalvez by several seconds. Shortly after, Nienke Vinke took charge and made it clear the pace would be blistering: by the second intermediate check, she was already 21 seconds ahead of Jooris.

The Dutch rider confirmed her strong form at the finish line with a time of 28:09 — more than 39 seconds faster than the time Jooris had set up to that point. Wilma Aintila was provisionally in third place, though her race was ultimately marred by a crash while she was contending for the medals. The landscape shifted decisively with the arrival of Wilson-Haffenden. The Australian rider passed the first intermediate check just behind Vinke and, far from losing ground, increased her speed in the second half. Upon crossing the finish line, she stopped the clock with a time that bettered the Dutch rider's benchmark by 28 seconds, immediately placing herself in the position of world champion.

Vinke ultimately had to settle for silver, while Vierstraete secured the bronze. Chladoňová finished fourth—narrowly missing the podium—and Ava Holmgren placed fifth. Ostiz, who had been running among the top ten at the second checkpoint, finished sixth, with Megan Arens immediately behind her.

With five riders still left to complete the course when Wilson-Haffenden set her time, the Australian had to wait to confirm the title. In the end, none of the final competitors could come close to her time, allowing the 21-year-old rider to celebrate the greatest triumph of her career in Montreal: the under-23 world time trial title.
