Stage 4 of the
Tour de Hongrie was the queen stage and the most important stage of the race. However, on a day where the climbers had a chance and the gaps would be biggest, it was a time trialist who took the victory. Under-23 World Champion
Jakob Söderqvist got himself in the breakaway of the day and took a breakthrough win.
Söderqvist, Adrián Benito,
Samuele Zoccarato and Darren van Bekkum formed the day's group, with a flat start and apparently without much concern for the peloton initially. The latter was dropped early on, and the riders entered the final circuit into Pécs where the riders climbed the same ascent on three occasions with 5 kilometers at 7%. The finish line coincided with the hardest segment of the climb, the first 2.2 kilometers which averaged 9%.
Despite the unfavourable terrain, the front trio went all the way to the final climb still in front and in position to fight for the stage win. Despite the gruesome gradients that went up to 16%, it was the group's heavyweight Söderqvist who managed to make the difference, riding to a stage win that should also lead him to the overall win this Sunday. Benito finished second on the day.
The main GC contenders were left in the dust, reaching the final climb with a gap that could not be closed. The fight was for third place, where Luke Plapp was the strongest - joined by William Lecerf Junior and Benoît Cosnefroy.
