UAE Team Emirates - XRG have taken their second win of the day (atfer Marc Soler won the GC at the Vuelta a Murcia) at the Figueira Champions Classic, as defending champion António Morgado has soared to a second consecutive win in Figueira da Foz - this time around beating Alex Aranburu in a two-rider sprint.
The day's breakaway was formed by Rafael Reis, Pedro Pinto, Diogo Narciso, Diogo Pinto and Daniel Viegas. The day, swept by the wind (which affected other races today), saw the race turn on as soon as the riders entered the final circuit, which had three laps and two climbs in each. Pinto went solo off the front, and then was reeled in by Reis, also Cedric Beullens and Iker Gómez who came from the peloton.
With two laps to go Brandon McNulty attacked in the peloton and was joined by Daniel Martínez, Max Poole and Riley Sheehan. The dangerous quartet held a gap for a substantial amount of time, but there was firepower in the peloton to bring them back. They were all reeled in into the final lap however.
Brandon McNulty attacked again the large climb of the circuit in the final lap, dragging with him Daniel Martínez, António Morgado, Alex Aranburu, Tom Gloag, Pau Martí and Jarno Widar. McNulty sacrificed his chances in order to keep the group ahead of the chasing small peloton.
And then in the final ramp, with just under 6 kilometers to go, Alex Aranburu attacked first; and then in the steepest pitch it was Morgado who attacked, only followed by the Basque rider. The duo collaborated into the finish.
In the final sprint then, despite Aranburu's large reputation, Morgado showed how explosive of a rider he is, and took the victory for a second year in a row. Pau Martí sprinted to third place behind.
