Paul Lapeira has won the 2026 Coppa Agostoni. The Decathlon CMA CGM Team rider was the fastest in a sprint that features the likes of Mauro Schmid and Brandon McNulty - who came close to winning for the first time since winning the World Championships.
The 166-kilometer long race followed a traditional format that typically leads to high-tension race. Highly difficult with plenty small climbs and a flat finale that forces riders to be tactical and have to pick their efforts wisely.
The start in Lissone did not quickly see a breakaway form up the road, with plenty teams trying to get the upper hand and anticipate the key phase of the race. Important riders were moving from very early on and with 115 kilometers to go a major group went up the road including Paul Lapeira, Nicola Conci, Mauro Schmid, Sam Maisonobe and Filippo Turconi.
The move was incredibly dangerous and forced others to bridge across shortly after. Amongst them Brandon McNulty and Jhonatan Narváez of UAE, Filippo Zana and Astana duo Lorenzo Fortunato and Thomas Silva.
But from this group more attacks came, and with 80 kilometers to go the winning group would form up front with the following riders: Paul Lapeira, Mauro Schmid, Brandon McNulty, Sam Maisonobe, Francesco Busatto, Lorenzo Fortunato, Andrea Raccagni and Mattia Bais. Bais and Busatto would get dropped; whilst behind the efforts of Tom Pidcock and Quinn Simmons - amongst others - would not prove successful in closing down the move.
A six-rider group headed to the line, collaborating well so as to prevent the return from the peloton. Fortunato tried to surprise but a sprint would decide the race. Paul Lapeira was the fastest at the finish and took a major win ahead of Brandon McNulty and Andrea Raccagni.
