“Remember to read serious media” – Visma lash out at rumours of shock Jonas Vingegaard 2026 comeback

Team Visma | Lease a Bike have emphatically dismissed reports that Jonas Vingegaard could reverse his decision to end his season and make a surprise return to racing in October.

The Dane’s name had resurfaced in connection with both the European Championships and Il Lombardia following reports in Italy that his training was progressing well enough for a late change of plan.

Visma sports director Jesper Morkov has now gone considerably further than simply denying that either race is under consideration. “I think I’ll put it this way: you shouldn’t believe everything you read,” Morkov told Eurosport’s Anders Mielke after stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana. “You have to remember to read serious media before drawing conclusions.”

Asked directly whether there was therefore anything to the comeback rumours, Morkov gave an equally emphatic response. “No, there isn’t.”

Vingegaard’s 2026 season was officially declared over in August after the collarbone fracture suffered during his stage 15 crash at the Tour de France delayed his return to training.

At the time, both rider and team were already looking towards next year rather than attempting to squeeze another objective into the autumn. “Due to the collarbone injury, the start of my training has been delayed and it is not possible for me to get back to top level in the coming period,” Vingegaard said when the decision was announced. “The focus is on preparing optimally for the goals of the 2027 season. I will discuss these specific goals with the team in the coming period.”

The recent Italian reports suggested that strong progress in training could have brought an October return back onto the table. The European Championships and Lombardia were subsequently mentioned as possible destinations. Morkov’s response makes clear that Visma have made no such change.

Vingegaard will therefore finish 2026 with victories at Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and the Giro d’Italia, where five stage wins helped him complete his collection of all three Grand Tours. His attempt to follow that with success at the Tour ended on stage 15, when his crash and subsequent collarbone fracture brought his racing year to an early close.

The denial also removes the prospect of Vingegaard appearing at Il Lombardia, a race he has started only once before, finishing 16th in 2022.

More significantly, there will be no reversal of the recovery programme agreed after the Tour. Visma had already said that the coming months would be used to rebuild Vingegaard towards 2027, with his specific objectives for next season still to be decided with the team.

The speculation may have gathered momentum as reports of improved training emerged, but the official position has never changed since August. Vingegaard’s next race remains scheduled for 2027, and Morkov has now made Visma’s view of the comeback reports equally clear.
