The women's elite time-trial World Championships take place on the 21st of September, and we take a look at the profile and favourites for the event. The difficult route can make it a very open race, with Chloé Dygert and Demi Vollering amongst the main favourites. The race is estimated to start at 10:10CET and finish at 12:55CET.
It's not a mountain time-trial, not a flat one either, it takes place fully at around 1500 meters of altitude and includes four climbs - one of them cobbled - totaling in around 500 meters of altitude. It's definitely not one for the specialists, and form may be more important than traditional time-trial expertize.
The start will be flat but the first intermediate point will be atop the Côte de Nyanza, 2.4 kilometers at 6%, 10.5 kilometers into the course. Then follows a descent and climb back up the exact same hill, only this time around longer and less steep (6.6Km at 3.5%). Not brutal climbs, but effort management will be important, specially as there are descents to recover.
The riders skip an extra climb that the men's course will have, and head straight into a cobbled climb. Flandrien-like, the Côte de Kimihurura is 1.3 kilometers at 5.9% and ends very close to the finish, but the riders will then continue to ascend all the way to the finish line, meaning it is key to save the legs to the final kilometers. This can benefit climbers such as Demi Vollering and Katarzyna Niewiadoma, but TT specialists like Marlen Reusser and Chloé Dygert can by no means be called weak in such short climbs it must be said.
