After Jumbo-Visma's Giro d'Italia preparations were rocked by numerous, positive covid cases amongst their riders, rumours have continued to persist that Primoz Roglic also has the virus but is continuing to race. Now it seems those rumours have reached the guys in the peloton.
Taking to Twitter to report what he had heard, Daniel Friebe revealed what Geraint Thomas had told him in a post-stage interview after the dramatic conclusion to stage 8 that saw Roglic attack his general classification rivals and gain time on Remco Evenepoel. "Not bad for a guy with Covid. He told me yesterday he had Covid..."
Jumbo-Visma had earlier denied these rumours with an official representative of the team telling GCN editor Daniel Benson that "this bullshit is going around now for about a week. It’s total nonsense." Nevertheless, it's true that Tobias Foss, Robert Gesink and Jos van Emden were all cruelly ruled out after positive tests and they would have undoubtedly been up close and personal with Roglic over the last few weeks.
As Friebe explains in his Tweet, these rumours must have reached the Jumbo-Visma leader. "Roglič heard it and, well, has either decided to have a bit of fun with it or, er, needs to find a new poker teacher." Thomas though famously has a dry sense of humour so it may have just been a tongue-in-cheek comment not to be taken too seriously.
