Olav Kooij wraps the 2024 season as side effects of an earlier crash take their toll on the Dutch sprinter

Olav Kooij's last race of 2024 was Gooikse Pijl last Sunday. Mixed feelings will prevail over this year's campaign which brought the Dutch sprinter a total of 8 professional victories, including one at the Giro d'Italia, and a silver medal from the European Championships. While it's a downgrade in quantity compared to last year's 13 wins, the quality of Kooij's competitions has certainly gone up.

One thing that didn't go very well for Kooij in 2024 was his health. The Dutch sprinter had to abandon Giro d'Italia with an illness and Renewi Tour after a crash. It might just happen to be this crash that now ends the Visma | Lease a Bike rider's season with a light knee injury.

Official communication from Visma | Lease a Bike below:

"Olav Kooij will not compete for the remainder of the season. The 22-year-old sprinter had been experiencing knee issues in recent days. Medical examinations revealed the presence of a small stone in his knee. This was likely the result of an earlier crash, and it now requires surgical removal. Following the procedure, he will need a short period of rest before beginning his recovery process. Given the timing, it has been decided that his season is over.

We wish Olav a speedy recovery and look forward to his return in 2025."
