Official: Remco Evenepoel returns to racing at Tour de Suisse - "It’s a great place to start looking forwards to the World Championships"

Remco Evenepoel is returning to racing, now confirmed to be at the Tour de Suisse. After building towards the Giro d'Italia over the first half of the season, the World Champion has had to abandon the Corsa Rosa with Covid-19 whilst leading the race, a heartbreak but one that must be accepted.

He now, after some rest, begins to race once again at the Tour de Suisse. “It has been quite the challenge to see a pathway through the rest of my season. We know that my main goal of this year was the Giro d’Italia and what happened was really unfortunate, so it was important to plan the right path with the team management," the Belgian said in a press release. "I think to begin in Suisse is the perfect start, and it allows me to revisit a race where I have good memories from my time trial win last year.”

Last year Evenepoel rode Suisse but with a modest 11th place. He used the race as a building block towards his final part of the season - to great success, including victories at Clasica San Sebastian, Vuelta a Espana and World Championships. Here he will use the racing as preparation for the national championships, and later on travel for an altitude camp ahead of the World Championships in Glasgow.

“Hopefully I can take some good legs from there to the Belgian Championships, to defend my TT title and to see what I can do in the road race. And then I can spend some weeks at altitude in the beautiful area around Val di Fassa," he reveals. "I have really enjoyed training there before and it is a stunning place to visit, with the advantages that being at altitude give, and it’s a great place to start looking forwards to the World Championships”
