Today marks two years since the tragic death of Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder, who lost his life following a high-speed crash on Stage 5 of the 2023 Tour of Switzerland. He was just 26 years old.
As the Tour de Suisse continues this week, Bahrain - Victorious took a moment to honour their former rider, sharing a heartfelt tribute on social media: “Forever in our hearts, Gino. Two years without you, and not a day goes by that we don't think of you.”
Mäder was widely admired in the peloton, not only for his climbing talent, but for his kindness, intelligence, and humility. His death sent shockwaves through the cycling world and remains a painful memory for those who raced alongside him.
More than just a gifted rider, he was a much loved teammate and friend. Two years on, his absence is still deeply felt, and his memory continues to inspire those who knew him. The question is has cycling done enough since this incident to improve safety in the sport?
