The 2026 national championships will be taking place in its grand majority this week, and the time trial events are set to take place mostly on Wednesday and Thursday. From several corners of Europe new - and old - champions are being crowned. Great Britain has seen its under-23 riders compete already with big winners whilst Netcompany INEOS have also taken Filippo Ganna towards another win.
In Italy the result was not close. Filippo Ganna has, for the seventh time, and for the fifth consecutive, won the Italian national time trial title. His triumph consisted of a margin of 2:06 minutes over UAE Team Emirates - XRG development team's Luca Giaimi, who impressed to be the best of the rest.
Mattia Cattaneo of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe was third, 2:36 minutes behind in Barolo. The 40-kilometer course favoured Ganna, but his task was facilitated by the crash and withdrawal of Edoardo Affini, whose Tour de France presence with Visma is now at risk.

Over in Great Britain, the women's race crowned Zoe Bäckstedt, who recently won a stage at the Tour de Suisse Women and also battled Marlen Reusser herself in the race's time trial. The win did not come as a surprise, but the margin was not comfortable. Anna Morris battles on to finish only 21 seconds off. Zoe's sister Elynor closed out the podium.
In the men's under-23 race, a familiar name was the victor: Wiggins. This time around, the former Tour de France winner's son Ben Wiggins was the fastest - by a long shot. The Hagens Bermans Jayco rider had as much of a margin over the second placed rider on the day as the second had over the 16th.
Wiggins won with 1:19 minutes over Henry Hobbs over a course of a mere 25 kilometers in Lampeter, whilst Finlay Tarling was third on the day. The men's elite race is set to take place later this afternoon, with main favourite Joshua Tarling out of the race.
