Nairo Quintana started the
Tour of Turkey as the overwhelming favourite for the overall classification however his ambitions were brought down on stage two as the Colombian crashed twice. Despite continuing in the race, the injuries have prevented him from reaching his goals.
On the second stage Quintana hit the deck inside the final 40 kilometers, crashing into a ditch but recovering his position in the peloton together with his teammates. However, with less than 4 kilometers to the line Arkéa hit the deck with several riders with Quintana in the middle during the run-up to the sprint.
Despite lost time he stayed in the race in search of a stage win on the race's queen stage, however he didn't have the legs to make the difference and finished fourth, watching Eduardo Sepúlveda take the win and race lead 15 seconds before.
"Due to Nairo's physical condition after his crash two days ago [stage two], it's almost a miracle today seeing him finish fourth after a 14-kilometer climb," team DS Ivon Ledanois said after yesterday's stage. "Nairo was very motivated to give it everything, but in sports there are no miracles. Since his crash, Nairo couldn't express himself completely, he has a lot of pain."
It is unclear if Quintana will now take a recovery period, as he is planned to be at the Vuelta Asturias in the coming weeks to defend his 2021 title.
