Primoz Roglic was, within a modest field, one of the main favourites to win the Ljubljana European Championships. With the home crowd behind his back he aimed high, but could only get away with a Top10 result at the finish.
"I always say you always try to win, but my win today was this ninth place. I wasn't at my best, so I had a big fight to achieve this," Roglic said in a post-race interview with CyclingPro.net.
Remco Evenepoel and Giulio Ciccone were the main favourite on the day, and unsurprisingly showed the best legs over the tough circuit in Sencur. With a climb of 2 kilometers at 10%, Roglic would seem like a premium medal contender.
Yet when the race really exploded, he did not have the legs to move out of the group he stood in. After the duo set off on the penultimate lap, only the bronze medal remained - which was then taken by Christian Scaroni.
"I was already dropped there a bit, I had a bit of a gap. If I was at my best or whatever, I should be there," the 36-year old lamented. "From there on I was alone in that group, and it was a big fight to come here to the finish."

Roglic was then part of the chasing group, but couldn't take the result he hoped for in the end. A 10th spot, finishing by himself right behind the group, was the end of his road raec.
"I was really enjoying all the crowds and all the people. This year, for sure, I will never forget. Big thanks to everyone".

Roglic aims for medal at time trial

Roglic, a former Olympic time trial champion, may however not be done with the Europeans in terms of results. This Wednesday, he will take part in the time trial event, which will mostly feature the already familiar circuit.
Without the likes of Remco Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna, it could be a prime opportunity for him to surprise. "It's a bit shorter, so maybe it could be a bit better for me."
