Marianne Vos was forced to settle for 17th place overall at the
Amstel Gold Race Ladies. The 35-year-old Dutchwoman was left rueing the fact he legs exploded in the final kilometres.
"In the end you go with a very thin group to the last time Cauberg, where you still try to sit well," the Jumbo-Visma revealed in her post-race interview. "There were still three of us there. Anna Henderson, Riejanne and me. Anna did a fantastic lead-out for me and Riejanne, but then it exploded."
Vos, who won the Amstel Gold Race back in 2021 just couldn't keep up once the flurry of attacks and counter-attacks that eventually saw Demi Vollering lead home a Team SD Worx one-two ahead of Lotte Kopecky in second and Shirin van Anrooij in third.
"Not only the race exploded, but also my legs," Vos laments. "So I didn't see the race from the front after that. It was tough, but if you cycle you stay reasonably warm. Still, I'm pretty empty now," she concludes.
