Movistar confirm Uijtdebroeks' new schedule confirmed after Tour de France abandon - He will join Mas at the Vuelta a Espana
Cycling
The withdrawal of Cian Uijtdebroeks in the opening week of the Tour de France was a heavy blow for Movistar Team. The Belgian was the squad’s main card for the general classification, but physical issues forced a premature exit.
Now, sports director José Joaquín Rojas has confirmed the next step in the young rider’s schedule: he will return directly at the Vuelta a España alongside Iván Romeo and Enric Mas.
Speaking to AS, the Spanish native explained that concerns over Uijtdebroeks’ condition began with the team time trial in Barcelona, where the Belgian’s performance was well below expectations.
Rojas admitted the early signs were not encouraging and the team quickly sensed something was off. “We didn’t get the start we wanted because we already noticed in the Barcelona TTT that Cian wasn’t right. He was the first who didn’t want to step off, but we could already see how things were trending.”
The Movistar director recalled that the Belgian began to suffer a series of health problems that ultimately made it impossible to continue: “What happened on day one wasn’t normal, for him to be dropped, because he has the capacity to be there in a TTT. Then came fever, stomach pain, vomiting… the first priority was the rider’s health.”

With his Tour ruled out, the team has set a recovery plan. Rojas confirmed that Uijtdebroeks will rest for a few days before starting an altitude camp with several teammates.
The aim is to bring him to the Vuelta a España in the best possible shape, where he will share leadership duties with Enric Mas: “Now he’ll switch off for a few days, then he’ll do an altitude camp with teammates and go straight to La Vuelta.”
The Spanish Grand Tour will be a key opportunity for both the rider and the team, who hope to recover one of their marquee signings for the GC fight.

Movistar reset their Tour objective
Riders such as Iván García Pierna and Pablo Castrillo have already gone on the offensive in breakaways, although the win remains out of reach for now.
Rojas acknowledges that will be the priority for the remainder of the Grande Boucle: “Now we’re only thinking about winning a stage at the Tour, which is the main objective.”
The Murcian also confirmed he will rejoin the team’s coaching staff during the Vuelta a España, working alongside Eusebio Unzué and José Luis Jaimerena “Chente” García Acosta.

Besides Enric Mas and Cian Uijtdebroeks, Movistar expect to field other key names such as Iván Romeo, while those not selected for the Spanish race will follow an alternative schedule featuring events in Italy and Canada.
“There’s also a nice alternative calendar, with Italy and Canada among other places, for those not at La Vuelta, so we need two strong squads,” Rojas concluded.
With the Tour’s GC already off the table, all eyes within Movistar Team turn to the Vuelta a España, where the team hopes to return to the sharp end with a recovered Cian Uijtdebroeks and Enric Mas once again as the reference for the Spanish outfit.

- Surely the UCI and the race organisers have a responsibility to ensure the best medical care is available to riders when incidents like this happen. All very well pushing for global expansion but not so good if riders lives are put at risk because medical support is not up to scratch.Andy12306-11-2026

- The American performance at the World's road race was a masterclass in cycling tactics. If it wasn't McNulty, it might well have been Jorgensen or Simmons to take off and win in a solo break.Occam06-11-2026
- What a gimmick
Rafionain-Glas06-11-2026 - Thats only cause he rides for UAE. In any other team he would be captain in many races atleast. UAE is just to crazymiguel06-11-2026
- He seems to be the rare athlete whose passion and curiosity about life beyond his sport equals his extraordinary achievements in it. It would be great for him to risk less of that life. He seems very grateful and joyful for what he has already attained.

- Ok, Walt 🤣... Vingegaard would be lucky to get on the poduim. He would not beat Seixas or Del Toro, let alone TP. Then there are the Americans...BD06-11-2026
- So, for starters. Cycling is a saturated, static/dying sport in traditional lands, it will not have resurgences like eg running occasionally does because of several obstacular (yes, I know that’s not a word but don’t make me point out the obvious at your expense) factors. Obviously, like almost everything involving money, there is a desire/need/advantage to growth and that can only come from (developing or just testing) new markets. For me, the WC is the obvious and best choice for several reasons, it comes at the end of the season so is less critical season risk wise, it is not a “pro” team race but nation based which makes integration of uncommon participation more natural. It is a vehicle for redistribution (one of a very limited number of available mechanisms to develop new markers fairly) that the fixed calendar doesn’t allow and it helps make budgets fairer over the long run (moving the whole circus to everywhere evens out everyone’s budget as opposed to having everyone always come to the same location.Jumpyjohn06-11-2026
- Sad that a more refreshing article like this, which could generate discussion in a number of directions, gets completely ignored for the importance of debating the level of superiority of one rider into every single last detail, including a majority of totally hypothetical ones. People complain there is no news in the off season and it’s boring but don’t realise how boring it is to review the same old discussion over and over again, several times a day. In fact, you’d almost think this was a rider fan website. Instead of complaining about the FREE (as long as you pay attention to data use if not unlimited coz this site consumes almost as much for loading Youtube) content, the presence of cv of authors (for the missed obvious reason that it makes it easier to insert extra advertising without changing formats), the lack of quality/checking and depth of articles, why not also think about the content, quality and variety of posts that everyone can contribute to? The platform becomes irrelevant when discussion is interesting.Jumpyjohn06-11-2026
