Natnael Tesfatsion will remain with Movistar Team through the end of 2028 after both parties reached an agreement to extend the Eritrean rider’s contract by two more seasons. The Spanish squad thus closes one of its major moves in the transfer market.
The renewal comes after a 2026 season in which Tesfatsion made a significant step up. The Asmara native took two wins, a stage at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque and the Circuito de Getxo, and added several high‑level results against top opposition.
The progress also shows in the numbers. Tesfatsion currently totals 1,231 UCI points, making him the second‑highest scorer at Movistar Team, only behind Enric Mas on 2,178. It underlines the growing weight the Eritrean has within the structure.
Since joining in 2025, Tesfatsion has gone from a prospect to one of the squad’s most productive riders. His output in classics, stage races, and punchy finishes has convinced the team to keep him as a key piece for the coming years.

Tesfatsion’s step forward in 2026

The Eritrean’s profile fits especially well in races with short, explosive climbs. His ability to handle sharp ramps, combined with a strong finishing kick, allows him to fight for wins in one‑day races and in stages over rolling terrain.
In 2026, however, he went up another level. His second place overall at the 4 Jours de Dunkerque confirmed he can stay competitive over several days, while sixth at the Deutschland Tour again showcased his consistency in stage races.

Classice performances

He also left his mark on several top classics. Tesfatsion finished fifth at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and seventh at Eschborn-Frankfurt, two results that reinforce his status as a rider able to mix it with some of the peloton’s best specialists.
For Movistar, his renewal secures the continuity of one of their fastest‑rising riders. And for Tesfatsion, the extension through 2028 offers stability to keep growing and take on more responsibility within the team.
“A new chapter, in the same home,” the Eritrean said after the agreement was announced. “I’m very happy to renew my contract and to keep representing this team. Thanks to everyone who believed in me. The journey continues.”
