The nineteenth stage of the Vuelta saw
Mads Pedersen take his third stage win. Jumbo Visma rider
Mike Teunissen sprinted to fifth place.
Overall it was a satisfactory day for the rider, he even had the opportunity to sprint for the stage win, but he was not in the best position to challenge Pedersen. “I had to survive the two climbs, but it went remarkably well. I had a good opportunity as several sprinters had already been released. The men brought me forward well, but I was just too much in jeopardy”, Teunissen said.
In the aftermath of
Primoz Roglic's departure from the Vuelta, the team has been unable to keep up the momentum. “Since Primoz left the race, we have been trying to make the best of it. That’s going very well,” said Teunissen.
It had been a particularly difficult tour for him with a crash, loss of the red jersey, and then ill health. His focus will be on enjoying the last two stages of the tour rather than worrying about the results. “I got sick and crashed. It was very tough. But things are improving, and I will get through it,” concluded Teunissen. He holds the 99th position in GC, 3 hours and 40 minutes behind overall leader Remco Evenepoel.
