Queen stage of this year's Tour de Suisse awaited riders on Thursday with Passo del San Bernardino on the route. Oscar Onley won the stage, but the whole day was dedicated to Gino Mäder who tragically passed away two years ago, on June 16. Had the tragic accident on Albulapass not happened, the popular Swissman would have arrived to today's start point - La Punt.
At the point where Mäder died in 2023, a temporary memorial was created immediately after the accident. Today, almost exactly two years later, a real monument -sculpture by Mäder's uncle, who is an artist - was unveiled in memory of Mäder at the spot where his life tragically came to an end.
For today's queen stage, another special moment has been included in the stage. At the passage over the San Bernardino Pass, the #rideforgino prize has been placed.
His former Bahrain - Victorious teammates were obviously heavily interested to take this prize to pay a tribute to their lost friend. And nobody was closer to him than Basque Pello Bilbao who rode towards the prize from the day's early breakaway.
