Tadej Pogacar is the moral winner of the mountain stage to Puy de Dome in the general classification. The leader of UAE Emirates was eight seconds faster than Jonas Vingegaard in the very steep final, meaning he reduces his gap to yellow jersey to just 17 seconds.
"Eight seconds is something, but this battle between the great champions will last another two weeks," sports director Mauro Gianetti told Sporza.
"Every second is important, but you can clearly see that Vingegaard has the same ambitions," he continues. "This battle is good for cycling. This is amazing. Pogacar's attack was long enough, but the difference between the two is very small. We take some advantage and it was a nice move from Tadej."
Gianetti is also pleased to see that after a minute loss in stage 5, Pogacar found his better legs and is now slowly recovering the lost time. "We hoped that Tadej was in the best possible condition in Bilbao, but we saw that was not the case. It is clear that he comes from a rest period. It is fresh and getting better every day. That is a good signal for us.”
