Mathieu van der Poel has already impressed in 2024 with victories at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Now, with the Amstel Gold Race on the horizon, he faces the possibility of matching a prestigious record that only a few have achieved before him.
The Amstel Gold Race, the first great Ardennes classic, is an iconic race that challenges cyclists with its steep hills and winding roads. For van der Poel, who has proven his dominance on varied terrain, this race represents a new challenge and an opportunity to make his mark in cycling history.
At stake for van der Poel is the possibility of matching a select list of cyclists who have managed to win both the Tour of Flanders and the Amstel Gold Race in the same season. These names include cycling legends such as Eddy Merckx, Jan Raas, Philippe Gilbert and Tadej Pogačar.
If van der Poel can add his name to this distinguished list, he will not only cement his position as one of the most talented riders of his generation, but also write a new chapter in the history of Dutch cycling.

Dude just did the double. Won Flanders 3 times. He is already legendary. Wining Amstel or not will not contribute much

Yeah, sorry just don’t see anyone going up to him, asking for an interview and then dropping the hammer on him.

So Mathieu, you’re already 29 and somehow you’ve won so many WC, Monuments, Classics all with the same 2nd rate team* without really being a road racer, but you never won Flanders and Amstel the same year so, do you feel you’ll still have time to prove yourself?

Did anyone ever dare to suggest Merckx wasn’t a legend coz he never won Flanders and P-R in the same season

Will we use the excuse that TP never won MSR and seems to refuse doing PR (I can understand) to stop him from becoming a legend?

Each rider has their profile and will do their disciplines, comparing riders across disciplines is pretty pointless, nobody compares Bolt to Moses or Coe to Mo, why this obsession in cycling?

And he shouldn’t be being compared with Merckx but with de Vlaeminck,

Merckx and de Vlaeminck were what Poga and Mathieu except they had rivalry and the current two just do their own thing despite everyone seeming to want them to start some rivalry.

There is the difference between "could" and "will" right? No?
