Marlen Reusser overwhelmed after teammate Demi Vollering let's her go for Itzulia Women victory: "I think somehow we both won today"

Team SD Worx was untouchable in the Itzulia Women. Marlen Reusser scored a double on the final day, as Demi Vollering allowed her to take the overall victory and finished second herself.

Vollering started the last stage in the leader's jersey, but let Reusser ride away and then defended her teammate's attack. The Swiss was able to win the stage and the final classification. Vollering had won the first two stages herself. “It really is a race that suits her very well,” said Reusser about Vollering. "I think somehow we both won today."

Reusser found it hard to believe how the final stage had gone. “I am overwhelmed,” she said. “When we discussed team tactics before the start, we could have chosen to defend the existing situation. But we said: "No, we want to race aggressively. We wanted to be the team that put the other teams on the defensive.” The Swiss rider attacked in the flat run-up to the finish on the final day, and Vollering's presence in the chasing group saw lack of commitment and the gap growing enormously.

“Demi was asked what she thought if this tactic led to a change in the standings and I won instead of her. She said she was fine with that. Today you could see that she was the strongest. She could answer all attacks. So she gave me a chance to attack, as planned. She's a real champion. I am so grateful to her," Reusser, who took advantage of the race situation, concluded.
