Marco Brenner has taken victory in a bunch sprint on stage 1 and moved into an early overall lead at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali 2024.
After four men had made the break of the day, they were all back in the bunch with around 12km to go to the finish line. With a downhill in the final few kilometres, the expected sprint finish was set to decide the day and the first man into the leader's jersey.
Marco Brenner tried his luck with a late move though and surprisingly, the German managed to hold off the bunch in spectacular style, taking the win ahead of a photo finish that decided second and third in the sprint. Eventually proving to be Matteo Malucelli and Jenno Berckmoes.
