The Vuelta a Espana 2024 is providing plenty of chances for breakaway riders to win, although on stage 14 it didn't quite happen. Seeing that everything was heading for a bunch sprint, Marc Soler decided to take the day easy.
The Spanish UAE Team Emirates rider has finished third three times so far. The stage victory in La Vuelta is eluding him, but at least his efforts have helped him to be second, tied with Jay Vine, in the mountains classification led by Wout van Aert. However the competition doesn't seem to pique Soler's interest who has the sole objective of a stage victory.
In fact, Soler wore the mountains jersey in this stage 14 because Wout van Aert (leader of the classification) also leads in the points classifcation (and therefore wore the green), although after the race he admits that it is not his main goal: "The first thing is to try to win a stage and from there see how far we can go and that gives me to get the jersey then delighted."
"Today you could see that Visma wanted to control, we were behind calmly and now we have to recover and think about tomorrow. I can take days like today to rest, I have that freedom to recover and continue. Now come very hard stages, we will try to take advantage of everything we can", concludes Marc Soler.
