Team Lidl-Trek has made an important move on the transfer market by signing Danish powerhouse Mathias Norsgaard on a two-year contract through 2027. The 28-year-old departs Movistar, where he has raced since 2020, to join one of the most ambitious squads in the WorldTour. For Norsgaard, the transfer represents both a professional step forward and a personal reunion, as he will now ride alongside his sister Emma, who recently joined Lidl-Trek’s women’s program for 2025.
At Lidl-Trek, Norsgaard will line up with compatriots Mads Pedersen and Mattias Skjelmose, two of Denmark’s most accomplished riders. The Dane was clear about his mission: to provide strength and reliability in the spring classics and, above all, to commit fully to Pedersen’s pursuit of a Monument victory. “I am very excited to join the team. This is a step forward for me. After all, my job as a cyclist is to be a gregario, and I was looking for that great leader that I could fully commit to. With Mads, I feel I have found just that. I want to be excellent at my job and I have a big dream: to help Mads win a Monument,” Norsgaard said in the team’s announcement.
The Danish rider also reflected on his history with Pedersen and the respect he has for his countryman’s leadership. “I'm two years younger than Mads, so I grew up knowing him without being close friends. Over the years, I've seen him become a leader like few others in the sport; you don't need to ask him if he's a leader, you can tell in the way he talks to the riders and staff. We had talked about riding together before, but cycling doesn't always offer the ideal situation. Now it does. Mads likes big riders, and at 2.02m I'm the tallest rider in the WorldTour, which I think can be a big help in my work as a gregario.”
Norsgaard also praised the team environment that awaits him, noting that his sister’s perspective had already given him insight into Lidl-Trek’s culture. “My impression of Lidl-Trek is that it is one of the best managed teams in the sport. There is no nonsense here, just pure joy and mutual respect. With leaders like Mads, Ciccone, Milan and Skjelmose, I know there will always be a role for me and a clear purpose in the team. Listening to Emma about how the team works only made the decision easier.”
For Lidl-Trek, the signing of Norsgaard represents a valuable addition both for the present and the seasons to come. CEO Luca Guercilena emphasized his qualities as a rider and teammate: “Mathias is a powerful engine and we are pleased to welcome him for the next two seasons. He has the ability to work up front for a long time, but also the versatility to support the team well into the finals. He has shown great ability in time trials, and we believe he still has a lot of potential to discover. Above all, Mathias is very motivated to give his all for his teammates, and we are confident that he will fit in perfectly with our group.”
With his imposing frame, proven time-trialing strength, and dedication to the collective, Norsgaard is expected to become a key figure in Lidl-Trek’s classics squad. For the rider himself, however, the mission is simple: to sacrifice, to serve, and to put Mads Pedersen in position to conquer the biggest one-day races in cycling.
