Laurens de Plus is back to his best form years after his breakthrough at Jumbo-Visma, and he's putting it to good use at the Giro d'Italia. Geraint Thomas was isolated from his team on stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia when the attacks began, but that proved to be no isue.
“It was a very solid day for our team. The stage was completed at a high pace and Jumbo-Visma developed a tight pace on the final climb. Rohan Dennis was strong and then the men from UAE Emirates took over," De Plus said in a video shared by INEOS Grenadiers. With Salvatore Puccio and Ben Swift in the breakaway the team looked to anticipate a hard day, whilst De Plus and Thymen Arensman were being saved for the final ascent.
The pace was very high however, and the group split very quickly with an acceleration from Jay Vine and then João Almeida. Thomas went on to ride a very strong ascent, finishing second and jumping back into the pink jersey, whilst De Plus could not respond, but finished in the second chasing group.
“It then became a hand-to-hand combat and G did very well. We can draw confidence from this. We are now in the third week and you can really see Thomas growing. I look forward to the days to come. How I feel? Tired, of course. It is now a matter of resting and recovering as well as possible," the Belgian concluded. De Plus himself, despite the domestique role, is riding currently in 10th place, 4:32 minutes back on his teammate.
