Portugal is in the spotlight, and not for the best of reasons, in the men's elite road race at the 2024 World Championships. Portugal brought six cyclists to the race and two have already fallen: João Almeida and Afonso Eulálio. The UAE Team Emirates rider was involved in a crash 220 km from the finish with Pello Bilbao and was already 39 seconds down on the peloton on the first pass to the finish line.
It was confirmed a few minutes ago by the Portuguese Cycling Federation in an Instagram post that the 26-year-old Portuguese rider had abandoned the race. Nevertheless, the organization guarantees that Almeida has no serious injuries. Afonso Eulálio, meanwhile, was involved in a crash 169 km from the finish and is already 54 seconds behind the peloton.
According to Eurosport's Olivier Bonamici, João Almeida has now finished his season. The Portuguese rider still had the Giro dell'Emilia on his calendar so time will tell in that regard.
