Jay Vine has had a rough start to this year's Giro d'Italia. After being involved in a number of crashes the Australian currently sits 21st in the GC, 2:47 down on the Maglia Rosa.
Bored of being constantly stuck behind crashes, Vine decided to try his luck in the stage 6 bunch sprint finish in Napoli. "No, I'm not a bunch sprinter, but I’m sick of getting caught up in accidents," the UAE Team Emirates rider revealed in a Facebook post following yesterday's finale. "Didn’t want to risk any more time loss, so I made sure I was right up there at the finish."
Thankfully for Vine and the rest of the general classification riders, stage 6 was a much quieter day. "Relatively uneventful day in the pelo, the climbs were too far out to make any impact on the stage itself," Vine recaps. "Happy with how today went, the team and I kept out of trouble and stuck to the front of the race throughout the day."
Although Vine's attempt at a sprint only ended up with him finishing in 12th, his teammate Pascal Ackerman finished an impressive third behind the eventual winner Mads Pedersen. "Pretty cool to see Pascal get 3rd on the stage! Congrats man. The team is all accounted for, and we are ready to hit the mountains," Vine continues. "Safe to say I’m looking forward to some vertical kilometres."
