After a dream start to the 2025 Tour de France, Alpecin-Deceuninck’s campaign took a dramatic turn on stage 3 as Jasper Philipsen crashed out during the intermediate sprint for the green jersey. The Belgian sprinter, who had claimed victory on stage 1 and briefly held the yellow jersey, suffered a broken collarbone and rib in the incident and has since undergone surgery.
"Stage three of the Tour de France was a tough day for us, as Jasper Philipsen had to leave the race after a heavy crash during the intermediate sprint for the green jersey. He has now successfully undergone surgery at AZ Herentals to repair his collarbone and AC joint," Alpecin-Deceuninck shared on Instagram.
"Thanks to the doctors for their excellent care. Now the road to recovery begins and we will support him until the end."
The Tour had begun on a high for the team, with back-to-back stage wins from Philipsen and then Mathieu van der Poel. No other squad has worn the yellow jersey so far. But the loss of Philipsen is a major blow as the race heads into stage 4.
With their top sprinter sidelined, attention will now shift more heavily to Van der Poel, who could see more freedom and opportunity in the coming stages. The team will need to regroup quickly as the Tour continues.
