Filippo Zana achieved the feat at the 2023 Giro d'Italia and now Elisa Longo Borghini has matched her compatriot at the Giro d'Italia Donne, taking a stage win in the Italian National Champion's jersey.
"It's really special to win here with the Italian champion's jersey and to win ahead of champions like Annemiek van Vleuten," said the 31-year-old in her post-stage interview after taking the win and moving up to second in the general classification, just 49 seconds behind the overall race leader, van Vleuten.
A big success for Longo Borghini also means a big success for her team. Formerly Trek - Segafredo, a change of sponsors now sees the Italian ride for Lidl-Trek and Longo Borghini was delighted to gift her new sponsors a victory.
"This victory means a lot to me and I'm happy to offer it to our new sponsor, Lidl," the former Paris-Roubaix Femmes winner announced with a smile.
