Oscar Onley took a stunning victory on stage 5 of the 2024 Tour Down Under, powering to victory atop the mythical Willunga Hill.
“It’s pretty incredible," the Brit admitted post-stage in conversation with the official website of Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL. "We knew I was in good form coming here but against the quality of guys here, I wasn’t sure how it would go."
Taking the win ahead of notable names like Simon Yates, Julian Alaphilippe and Jhonatan Narvaez among others, Onley couldn't quite do enough to take overall lead in the race, that honour falling to second place finisher, Stephen Williams.
"I’m really grateful to the whole team and everyone who helped get me here. It’s going to be tough tomorrow but we have a really good team here and we will do our best to try and go for it again and see if we can move up that one spot," Onley concludes.
"The team knew I could do it, they’ve had a lot of faith in me and have been keeping me calm the last few days. In the hectic sprint stages the rest of the guys have really invested in me to keep me safe and not lose any time, so it’s nice to be able to pay back their hard work here. It’s a pretty iconic climb Willunga Hill so to have my name on the winner’s list is really cool.”
Not only is it @OscarOnley's first pro win, it's also our first win as Team @dsmfirmenich @postnl - what a special day! 💪🏻
