Jonas Vingegaard has seriously attacked Tadej Pogacar today at the Tour de France, and tried to do damage right before the race enters the mountains. The leader of Team Visma | Lease a Bike also commented on his rivals crash late into the day, although the two arrived together at the finish in Toulouse.
Visma has been looking to do damage for many days now already and they looked for chaos once again on the 11th day of racing in France. The stage starting and finishing in Toulouse had very little climbing until the final hour of racing but that didn't stop a raging GC battle from taking place. Visma often placed Victor Campenaerts and Wout van Aert in groups that were pursuing the breakaway in the midst of the chaos.
At a certain moment with around 65 kilometers to go, Vingegaard attacked in the peloton, all-out and trying to create the difference to Pogacar. He momentarily succeeded, surprising his rival and being joined by yellow jersey Ben Healy into a group including van Aert. It was a very dangerous raid, but one that saw a response from the World Champion.
Late in the day Vingegaard would still try over the top of the final ascent, attacking the GC group on the very steep gradients of the final ascent before entering the streets of Toulouse. Matteo Jorgenson also attempted to make the difference but the duo could not. But with 4 kilometers to go, Pogacar crashed after a touch of wheels in the group, and although Visma had a golden opportunity to finally take time on the Slovenian, they chose not to take advantage of the situation.
"When it happens like that, it's just a stroke of luck. It's not that he missed a turn or anything, he just touched the wheels," Vingegaard said. "So yeah, I think it was the right way to do it".
Ultimately both arrived in the peloton and maintain the same gap into the first high mountain stage of the race.
