Juan Ayuso was one of the most active riders in the first mountain stage of the Vuelta a España. The Spaniard attacked on the final climb, but couldn't get away and eventually had to settle for third place.
"Today I wanted to try something on the final climb to get back time. However, that was difficult due to the strong wind," said Ayuso through UAE Emirates channels.
Ayuso was able to sprint for victory in the last hundreds of meters, but did not come close to Evenepoel. Marc Soler tried to help me, but it was difficult to get past Remco on such a finish. But this result gives me confidence for the upcoming mountain stages."
The 20-year old Ayuso is currently in eleventh place in the general classification. He sits less than 40 seconds behind leader Remco Evenepoel.
