After a brilliant solo victory on stage 3,
Soudal - Quick-Step's
Mauri Vansevenant has taken the overall race lead at the 2024
Tour de Luxembourg. Holding an advantage of just 23 seconds though, the Belgian feels far from safe ahead of the individual time trial.
"I already have the Vuelta in my legs so I had the feeling for three days that I wasn't tired.
When my engine starts, it doesn't stop. When I'm alone I can keep going. I knew I still had power left and to win like this is very nice," Vansevenant reflected in his post-stage interview afterwards, having powered clear of breakaway companion Davide Formolo before the finale. "I felt like I was the engine of the two of us. I didn't want to take the risk: he didn't push much so I wanted to be sure that I wouldn't give it away. So on the last climb I gave it my all."
As mentioned, next up at the Tour de Luxembourg is an individual time trial, a discipline that the Belgian has never really excelled in. "I will go for it of course. It is not my speciality, so I do not know if I can keep the lead in the classification," he previews reservedly. "In any case, we have already achieved our goal: we have a victory. That is great for us, it can only get better. We have the motivation now, so we keep going."
