Earlier this week, the shocking news of Remco Evenepoel being involved in a horrible training crash emerged from Belgium with the Olympic champion colliding with a BPost car. As you might expect, this news was incredibly concerning for father Patrick Evenepoel, made even more so by the fact that he couldn't get into contact with his son for an update.

“We would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support we received yesterday,” wrote Patrick on LinkedIn. “Remco is currently being cared for and is doing well, given the circumstances. It is every parent’s horror to hear that their child has been involved in an unfortunate accident. We would like to thank the emergency services and the people who were quickly at the accident for their initial care. We have also been in contact with the people at BPost and would also like to encourage the postman: no one wants to be involved in such a situation.”

With the resultant injuries of the crash including a dislocated collarbone and lung contusions, things are bad for the Soudal - Quick-Step leader, but arguably not as bad as they could have been. As mentioned though, during the ordeal, Patrick Evenepoel and the rest of Remco's family were unable to get into contact with the former Vuelta winner to get reassurance over his condition.

“For us as a family, it was a particularly difficult day yesterday. Due to the malfunction at Telenet, it was impossible for Remco to reach either his wife or us. We were also unable to communicate with each other. As parents, we had to hear the news that our son was being taken to hospital from a friendly ambulance driver. Not being able to contact each other in such a situation is actually unacceptable,” he explains. “The coming weeks will be all about recovery. As a family, we will do everything we can to let Remco recover in the best conditions and with the best care.”
