"I'm disappointed that I couldn't get a result in the sprint, but it is what it is" - Mick van Dijke's day in the breakaway ends in disappointment at the Tour de Pologne

Jumbo-Visma's Mick van Dijke had a busy day in the breakaway on stage 5 of the 2023 Tour de Pologne alongside most notably, Thomas de Gendt. Sadly for the 23-year-old though, the stage win was out of reach.

"My goal beforehand was to be in the breakaway," says the Jumbo-Visma rider to his team's official website in a post-stage interview. "We succeeded. We knew it would be a tough day. I survived the climbs well and during the ride I had the idea that the breakaway could be made a success. The gap got so small on the local laps that I decided to drop back myself to save some energy. I hoped to sprint for the stage victory in the final."

In the end, Marijn van den Berg emerged as the winner, with van Dijke having to settle for a 42nd-placed finish at the line. “I was still in a reasonable position entering the last corner, but I lost my position because of the hectic pace," he analyses. "I'm disappointed that I couldn't get a result in the sprint, but it is what it is."
