Illness to blame for poor Benoit Cosnefroy performance at Amstel Gold Race according to AG2R Citroen

Benoit Cosnefroy took to the start line at the 2023 Amstel Gold Race with big hopes of pulling of the victory. Sadly for the Frenchman 21st was all he could manage and according to an official announcement illness was to blame.

"I was sick in the Amstel Gold Race," Cosnefroy revealed in a press release discussing the team's hopes for the upcoming La Fleche Wallone. "My bronchi are still a bit congested, but I hope I will recover enough to compete in La Fleche Wallone on Wednesday."

Teammate Alex Baudin implies that Cosnefroy will be there, leading the team and hopefully putting up more of a victory challenge than the 27-year-old could at the Amstel Gold Race. "The aim will be to position Benoît well at the critical points," says Baudin.

Also expected to play a role for the AG2R Citroen Team is the recent winner of Brabantse Pijl, Dorian Godon. After crashing out of the Amstel Gold Race the Frenchman, like Cosnefroy will also be hoping for a better result at La Fleche Wallone.
