Remco Evenepoel will be out to retain the Rainbow Jersey at the Glasgow World Championships, whether that is on the road or in the time-trial he doesn't seem to mind. As long as it's a fellow Belgian that wins the road race.
“We have three different cards to play. We must use our strengths together. I think we have the strongest team," says the Soudal - Quick-Step rider, referencing the star-studded lineup the Belgium team can boast including the likes of Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen in conversation with Wielerflits. "If Wout would win on Sunday and I would win on Friday, that would be good for me too."
The actual course of the men's elite road race has been a bit controversial with a number of the Belgian team being critical, including van Aert and Tiesj Benoot. “The track is a bit Formula 1-like. It is certainly not as easy as it was said beforehand," says Evenepoel. "I do have some questions about some passages. The crash barriers could sometimes be a little more on the side.”

Does Evenepoel foresee himself launching a long-range attack, a la Liege-Bastogne-Liege? “Why not, a solo is possible on all courses. I may be targeted, so my two companions will be important. It is very important that we have three trump cards. Wout rode a very good season and Jasper won 1000 stages in the Tour,” he concludes confidently.
